Join us at Code Talent for our Local Expert speaker series featuring [Dr. Scott Wolff](https://www.linkedin.com/in/scott-wolff-1941aa2/) as he discusses "A Journey from Symbolic AI to Machine Learning and Applied AI" Before AI meant neural networks, it meant IF-THEN rules and formal logic. This talk traces the journey from Simon and Newell's Logic Theorist and General Problem Solver, through the mathematical psychology of bounded rationality, Prospect Theory, and catastrophe models of insight, to the statistical turn and modern machine learning. Drawing on four decades of hands-on work: expert systems for USPS and gas turbine controls, intelligent tutoring systems, financial risk models, and current AI/ML at General Motors. Scott Wolff argues that mathematics has remained the one continuous language across every era of AI and that the current integration of symbolic and statistical approaches is less a break with the past than a return to it. Dr. Scott Wolff is one of the OG data scientists right here in our neighborhood. He was building "intelligent" systems FOUR decades ago that would flow into what we call AI systems today. Scott holds a PhD in cognitive psychology from Northwestern University. He is a Staff Data Scientist in Marketing Applied Sciences at General Motors, Principal Data Scientist at Bighorn Analytics, and is a professor at Colorado Mesa University where he teaches Quantitative Thinking in the Davis School of Business.
